Billboard Awards 2013

So last night was one of the biggest music award shows of the year, the Billboard Awards. Taylor Swift swept the board scoring eight awards in all, and rightly so in my eyes! (I'm a big fan.) But at the end of the day, most of us don't really care about who won what award, we care about the fashion. I think with this awards show, like the MTV VMAs or Movie Awards, it allows the celebrities to be a bit more adventurous on the red carpet. Unlike the Oscars, out go the long, formal gowns and in come bright colours and patterns! And last night did not disappoint, despite the lack of A-list attendees. But here are my best dressed nominees! :)

Not only am I obsessed with Taylor Swift's music but also her style, both on and off the red carpet. She has her style sorted and knows exactly how to dress for her shape. Being a country gal, I expected her to go for something sequinned and I love this cobalt blue colour on her. I'm also a fan of the pattern of the sequins; it's a fresh take on what could've been just a blocked, sequinned dress and the heart-shaped back detail is a quirky touch and very apt for her. The length of the dress by Zuhair Murad shows off those killer legs that she has (I don't think it's too short, it covers her bum for God's sake!) and the dress is paired with those equally killer heels! Because the dress is so show-stopping, the grey metallic heels are the perfect match. By tying her hair up, it allows the dress to take centre stage. In fairness though, it's rare that I don't like a Taylor Swift outfit!

Next up is one of my other girl crushes, Selena Gomez. Her red carpet style has matured over the past year or so and she's starting to match her dresses to the event impeccably. Here she has gone for a crisp, white Versace gown with neon-coloured piping. Without the neon, this gown would have aged her and would've been inappropriate for this event. I love the flesh panel in the middle, it shows off a bit of skin without showing too much and the thigh-high slit is a red-carpet fave at the moment! The only problem I have is that I think the dress is an inch too long; just taken up slightly at the bottom would mean it doesn't drag on the floor and shows off those amazing heels. Her and Miss Swift may be good friends but they are competing for each other in the best shoe category! And just like her friend, she has opted for hair up to show off the lovely neckline of this dress.

Third is Miley Cyrus who went for a bold Balmain jumpsuit/catsuit/call it what you will with a monochrome colour scheme. At first viewing, I wasn't a fan but after seeing in a few more times, I've been converted. It's definitely a fashion risk but it's the perfect place to do that! The punk-inspired outfit fits perfectly with her new haircut and the catsuit fits her like a glove, oh the beauty of being rich and having a tailor! The only issue for me here is the amount of make-up she has own. She is a naturally gorgeous girl and I know she's trying to revamp her image but I've always been a believer that you should emphasise just the eyes or the lips, not both. But other than that, I'm loving the punk rock hairdo and the matching punk style!

Next is Emmy Rossum. Now I'm not usually a fan of velvet, I just hate the feel of it, urgh! But this dress complements her figure so well! Again, I'm a new member to her style fanclub but she dresses so elegantly and sticks to classic styles. If this dress was all velvet, it would look like a goth's wedding dress but with the breaks of mesh throughout the dress, it keeps it from looking drab. Normally I would be against such a long gown to an event such as this but because it is quite revealing and daring for her, it's a fashion risk for her. I'd say it's a risk paid off because she looks stunning!

Someone else who opted for black was Hayden Panettiere. Because she's such a petite girl like myself, it's important to wear clothes that fit! The bodice of this dress is simply stunning; the ruffles lift this dress from being drab and add a girly element to the look to conteract her athletic frame. If it wasn't for the open back, the dress would look too prim and proper. Again, the hem of the dress could do to be lifted up slightly but I'm loving the slit at the back of the dress; it shows those beautiful shoes off!

Sticking with the black theme, here is Ariana Grande. Since her role on Nickelodeon's Victorious, Ariana has catapulted into the public eye and with that, her super-cute style has caught my eye. This is probably because I envy those who dress girly and can get away with it without looking like a small child. She sticks to prom dresses that fit her petite figure and she always has a pair of heels on. Because she usually goes for a bright, block colour, to see her in a darker shade and a different texture is different. But again, the look is faultless.

Last but not least is Kacey Musgraves, who until today I had never heard of! (She's a country singer apparently!) Now I am a fan of lace so this dress is right up my street! Because of the high neckline, the dress needs to be short to keep it from looking fuddy-duddy and the asymetric hemline certainly does that. Paired with fuschia heels, it keeps the look fresh and young.
